Tradition of Paithani Saris in India

The paithani sari from Maharashtra is part of a culture, not only for the state but also for India. These saris are not just silky saris of gorgeous deigns and color. Though paithani sari originated in state of Maharashtra, it is worn by ladies all over India.  The sari is fabric woven totally on handlooms. The special light and shade effect is achieved by bringing two separate colored silk threads together by process of simple tabby weave. Since the sari originated from s small town, paithan, in Aurangabad district of state of Maharashtra, which is close to Ajanta caves, the designs of the sari have close resemblance to the design panels of the caves. The main part of the design is colors of vegetables, dyes, red, green, black, white and purplish.

The special feature of a paithani sari is its border and pallav. Earlier, just   2- 3 colors were popular, which were part of the light and shade pattern.  Depending on the intricacies of the design, a paithani sari can take up to one year to get woven. Its finer work is very demanding and takes many hours on each day of the woven process. Initially, the paithani sari used to be a plain sari with zari border and ornamental pallav. But today paithani sari has lot of motif, stars, flowers, paisleys and peacock designs on it .The name, which a paithani sari gets also, comes after the design on it.Tota –mania ( parrot ) narli ( coconut ) bangadi –mor ( peacock with round design )  are some of the name which are given to paithani sari on the base of  its design .

These days the tradition of paithani sari may not be popular but the design pattern on it has attracted the attention of fancy sari designers. Materials used in a paithani sari –

Three types of silk thread are used in a paithani sari. Charka is extensively used but it is dull, uneven and cheap. The other type is called Ciddle –Gatta which is smooth, shiny and thin. Third type is china silk which is quite expensive to use.  Caustic soda is used to clean the raw silk and the silk is dyed in the different shades. Then the threads are carefully separated. Gold threads are used in double and in such a way that closely woven silk looks like a mirror.

Tradition of Banarasi Saris and Tips ON Sari Care

As the name suggests the saris that are made in Banaras are called Banaras saris. These saris are known as one of the finest in India. The fine woven silk is used to make them and they are decorated with rich embroidery of gold and silver. The decoration and heavy intricate design makes them bit heavy compare to other saris in India.

Intricate intertwining floral which is inspired by mughal design and use of upright leaves at the outer edge is the special characteristic saris made in Banaras. Some details which go into making of a banarasi sari are gold work, figures with small details, compact weaving, mina work, metallic visual effect and a net like pattern.

The sari with simple design can take 15 days to complete. However, the saris with complicate design and other patterns can take six months before; they are given put on display.

These banarasi sarees are worn by ladies only on important functions like wedding and on anniversary functions.  Because of their relatively intricate design and also considering that they are heavy than other saris, banarasi sari is not used on daily bases.

Banarasi saris can be put into five categories such as jangla, tissue, vastak, and cutwork. Some important varieties of banarasi saree are pure silk, georgette, silk and zari.

Tips on Sari Care –

Every lady should know the basic tips to keep a sari for longer period. With the following easy to adopt techniques, the life of sari can be prolonged.

Always keep washed and unwashed sari separately .Never uses a soap or detergent with heavy chemical to wash the sari, especially with sari which has a complicate design and pattern. The use of heavy chemical damages the pure silk saris. The sari which was worn once should not be kept with the unused saris; they should be kept in separate wardrobe. The sari with heavy design and patterns should be given to dry cleaning. The whole pattern and embroidery will get damaged if they are hand washed.

Silk sari must be covered in muslin cloth and store in cool dry place. In case of lipstick stain, the sari should be washed in cold water and soap or detergent must be used in the target area only. In case of heavy stain, the best option is dry cleaning. Acetone can be used to remove the nail polish stain and then wash the affected area.

The best option to buy a sari is always offline and going to famous retailers, Fancy Designer Sarees in Thane will show some of the latest designers’ sari for all occasions.
